behinde the her Multi award winning
work ” Ancestral Roots” ” I asked Arielle Ndiaye whether she would be my model for this drawing. At that time, Arielle was in South Africa on a three-month international student programme studying multi-racialism and multi-culturalism in post-apartheid South Africa.
Arielle was born in the States; is a lovely young American college student and she was both intrigued and horrified by the gross injustices her ancestors had endured. They had been emancipated slaves in the USA and her family’s original roots were in Africa.
She was severely affected by the reality of walking through the prison on Robben Island, and passing Mandela’s prison cell. I began this drawing on the day we visited the prison.”
