Bert Touwen

Artist Bio:

Bert is a painter living on the shore of a large dam in the Elgin Valley of the Western Cape in South Africa.
When he retired from farming in 2000, he was able to engage more fully in his favourite pastime: painting. Working mainly in acrylics, his work has a contemporary feel with a graphical aspect as a result of his engineering background.

Bert likes cheerful images in bright colours, reflecting his optimistic view of life. Currently, he paints mostly quirky large portraits or flowers that bloom around him.

Most of his paintings are 1,2 meter square on canvas, large enough for accents in modern homes or business reception areas.

JALAUN SCHULTZ

“Colour is an important element in my art and the feeling and mood that different hues and shades can convey and create.” – Jalaun Schultz

TRANSFORMATION
Acrylic on canvas

I am a self-taught artist that resides in Somerset West. Some of my earliest memories are of me drawing – creating has always been my passion. However, it took o few years to get back to that desired place.
After obtaining a qualification in law and spending a few years working – I finally had the time to breathe and focus on creativity after my daughter was born, as I stopped working full time.

Painting for me has always been a joy – a need to express the astounding beauty that often surrounds us often in the small and overlooked things such as a bright yellow lemon from my tree in the garden. The incredible detail in creation never ceases to amaze me and being able to interpret a fraction of that on a canvas is awe-inspiring.

My painting style is realistic, with the occasional nod towards abstraction, to incorporate additional unexpected elements – even if it’s just in the background of o particular artwork. Finding the perfect balance between realism and abstraction is a process that fascinates me – a journey, not just to point out what I see but also what I feel. Artists who inspire me have perfected balancing these opposite ends of the scale.

Additionally, colour is an essential element in my art, as the different shades and hues can set the mood or feeling of a piece.

Jane Barnes

“If I create from the heart, nearly everything works,

if from the head, almost nothing.” – Marc Chagall

Artist statement:

My distinctive, abstract style is the perfect expression of my spontaneous response to the world I see and experience every day.
Each painting is full of energy and created with dynamic layers of colour. Just as in life, there is always more to discover if you pause to take a moment to look. My paintings are full of unexpected hints of what lies underneath, there’s a depth to discover.

I invite you to experience my paintings; to absorb what is seen, and to revel in the elicited response that I hope to stimulate.

Artist biography:

Jane Barnes has always loved to explore different ways to depict the world around her. This passion led to formal Fine Art studies, where Jane realized that she did not want to draw from, only put down colour. Through a personal journey of trauma during her studies, she found her unique voice and her own contemporary, abstract style.

Jane has lived in both developed and developing countries around the world, and the distinct and rich cultural experiences had a profound influence on her art. While Jane drew inspiration from the landscapes and people, it is her intuition and connectivity to the people and landscapes around her that contribute to the depth of her paintings, and her choice of colours.

Annette Du Preez

Artist Bio:

I am a retired Biology teacher and moved to Somerset West in 2005. I have been painting occasianally since 2002.

With Covid restrictions my husband and I were not able to travel much, so I started painting more often since the beginning of Covid.

Sitting on the veranda watching the Helderberg through the changing seasons, we enjoy the various vistas over a glass of wine.

Covid brought a lot of restrictions but there are also positives. So, no more painting procrastination!
